Happy Village –  We have completed the base line survey at 160 houses at Nallambakkam – Kandigai Panchayath on Saturday 14th July 2012. The village needs a lot of support in terms of sanitation & health. The 70 Rotaractors from MNM Jain college did a commendable job . Rtn.Kannan Arumugam was kind enough to provide transportation and lunch for all of us. Rtns.PP.Thiagu,PP.Gopal,Kannan Arumugam & Kulamani were present. We now propose to construct 40 toilets in the irula settlement and conduct extensive medical camps for the villagers at the Nallampakkam school. Rotary Club of Adyar – Fourrts Medical Centre was started at Thoraipakkam in 2006 to give medical assistance to the under privileged and to treat poor patients. The Club meets the expenses of hiring doctors & nurses and Fourrts India Lab Pvt. Ltd. sponsors the medicines. The Centre treats about 1000 people every month, for a nominal fee. We also conduct free medical camps at this Centre. Our long term goal is to make this medical centre into a full fledged hospital by the year 2020.

Puthuyir Parisu – The joy of giving – our fellow Rotarians enjoy the wonderful memories of their anniversaries / birthday’s of their loved ones, when contributing to the needy. These kits are given to all babies born at Govt.Kasturiba Gandhi Hospital (Gosha hospital), on that day. The kit comprises of  500gms of Horlicks ,  a packet of Biscuits,  a towel and dresses for the baby -cost of each kit is approx Rs.200/-. Our gesture of distributing these kits is always well received by the mothers of the new borns. We have crossed a 1000 kits since inception of this project on 1st Jan 2008, and over 365 kits in the last year.

Operation Warmth –  Every year, in the cold month of December, blankets are provided to pavement dwellers. Our members gather together after midnight and travel in groups covering the length and breadth of the city, armed with blankets to gently cover the homeless people, who lie on the pavements, shivering in their sleep. Only some awake up and bless us with gratitude, while the majority will cosy up and give us greater satisfaction!

Schools to Smiles Project – Our plans to build classrooms, compound wall, toilets and water supply for the Panchayat Union School at Kandigai, was presented to the District Collector at Kanchipuram, in 2004. He in turn, sanctioned a building for 3 classrooms at a cost of Rs.4.5 lakhs, based on our project report. We have spent Rs.10 Lakhs, over a period of three years, towards construction of the compound wall, toilet block, bore well & overhead tank, desks & benches, play equipment and library. The 400 school children, teachers and the entire village of Kandigai could not belive the transformation that had taken place in their midst. We plan to use this experience for similar projects at rural schools based on need.

Vocational training course – Every year, we run a Vocational training course  for 25 to 30 school dropouts. On successful completion of this course, each student is awarded a certificate and a set of tools to begin a career.

Ventilator Project – Three Ventilators were donated to the Institute of Children’s Health, Egmore in 2010. Each unit costs around 2.34 Lakhs and saves the lives of helpless children in the neo-natal ward, every day of the year.
