J.P.M. ROTARY CLUB OF CUTTACK EYE HOSPITAL

Rotary Club, Cuttack was organising Eye Camps in the rural areas of the then undivided Cuttack district and members of Rotary Club of Cuttack used to contribute towards the expenses for such camps. At a later stage the expenses for holding such camps was subsidized by Royal Commonwealth Society for the Blind, UK. Then reach the thought that organizing few eye camps per year will not control blindness. There has to be a permanent project and this idea gave birth to JPM Rotary Eye Hospital & Research Institute. The Hospital was built in collaboration with sight savers International (SSI) formerly known as Royal Commonwealth Society for the Blind, UK and was opened on 14th January, 1992 by conducting 27 cataract surgeries on that day.

Every year number of surgeries are increasing and number of cataract operations were also conducted free of all charges. The Hospital also offers sophisticated modern cataract and other eye disorder treatment at affordable cost. This has helped large number or patients the opportunity for treatment of very low cost in comparison to similar facilities available outside the State.

Many interior pockets of the State were visited and operated in areas where most of the people are tribal who regained their eye sights free of cost.

The Institution has been recognized by Govt. of India as a training center for different types of advanced cataract operations. So far JPM had trained, Ophthalmologists from the States of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttaranchal Uttar Pradesh, Chhatisgarh, Bihar West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu in addition to our State.

Besides cataract surgery, the hospital has fully developed specialized clinics in Retina, Glaucoma, Cornea, Paediatric Ophthalmology, Contact Lens and Squint Surgery. In recent past, World Health Organisation has recommended JPM Rotary Club of Cuttack Eye Hospital to be one out of two Paediatric Ophthalmology training centers of the Country, The Hospital has also started a special drive for care and management of diabetic retinopathy patients. JPM has also set up an advanced Paediatric Eye Care Center which becomes fully operational from 14th January, 2011. Our involvement in the State of Jharkhand has been very successful. The Hospital Successfully operated many cataract patients in the State of Jharkhand. Further JPM conducted an outreach surgery camps in the State of Arunachal Pradesh. Conducted Blind School Survey to assess the prevalence and also the reasons of such blindness.

The Institution provides education facilities to “Clinical Assistants” for eye care treatment. The Hospital staff are regularly sent to recognized ophthalmology institutions outside the State for upgrading their knowledge in eye care, treatment and management. All Ophthalmologists are regularly attending ophthalmology conferences, seminars and workshops outside and inside the State. The “Papers presented by them have received recognition at State and National Levels.

The Institution is aimed at imparting best possible Eye Care in all aspects and to be one of the referral ophthalmology institutions of the Country in near future.

SAMPATRAI ROTARY SENIOR CITIZENS' HOME

(Shradha - Sadhana - A Bird's Eye View)

The world is becoming older day by day. Modern Science, Treatment facilities, spread of education, higher standard of living and family welfare measures are the causes of our longevity. The Senior Citizens in under developed Countries and developing countries are living a very wretched and neglected life. It is our duty to see that older people not only live longer but live a decent and dignified life.

The family members of Late Sampat Rai Dhanawat have substantially contributed towards the running of 'Shradha' and in recognition of it the Home has been named as Sampatrai Senior Citizens Home.

The seed of a senior Citizens Home was planted during Dr. Abdul Kalam's visit to Cuttack when he was a Sr. Scientist. The foundation of the Home was laid on 28th June, 2002 by Hon'ble Justice Ranganath Mishra, the former C.J. of India in presence of several dignitaries. On Sri Ganesh Puja Day (31st August, 2003) 'Shradha' was inaugurated by Justice Shri Mishra. It has the capacity to accommodate 25 disadvantaged men and women above sixty years. These persons are staying with peace of mind and their medical care is being taken up. They are getting old age pensions from the State Govt. also. Good food and other basic amenities are being provided. Iswariya Vishwa Vidyalay institution is teaching them Japa, tapa and meditation.

This project is a 2 crore project and funds are being collected from MP LAD, MLA LAD, benevolent donors, Rotarians and others. Now 'Shradha' is like a hermitage. Many persons of eminence have visited the Home and appreciated our Centennial Project. We have a big dream to get another adjoining five acres of land which will be developed for creating centers of vocational Training, Library, Common recreation and meditation Hall, apart from Dairy Farm, Kitchen garden, Nursery, Fish Pond, Medicinal Plant gardens etc. However, these are all in the pipeline.

The 2nd phase of the Senior Citizens Home is named as 'Sadhana'. This came to being when our Chief Minister Mr. Naveen Patnaik inaugurated it on yet another Sri Ganesh Puja Day on 18th Sept., 2004. This project is for the middle class elders who are willing to cover the maintenance cost without the hassles of running a home. They are housed in a built-in living room with attached toilet and Kitchenette and they will also have common dining and recreation facilities. This project is self-financing. The charges are very reasonable.

GAJANANDA AGARWAL MEMORIAL ROTARY CLUB OF CUTTACK - CHARITABLE DISPENSARY

Geriatrics is not a new concept, which is now given a new dimension to the golden years of life. As the age old saying goes “old is gold”, we should enable the elderly to live a happy and graceful life.

So it has become our moral duty and obligation to improve the quality of life of the elderly in our society. So in view of this, Rotary charitable dispensary and geriatric Clinic, established on 23-04-2001, which is now renamed after Late Rtn. PP Gajananda Agarwal as Gajananda Agarwal Memorial Rotary Club of Cuttack, Charitable Dispensary, has set out on its duty of giving a healthy life to the needy.

This is a multi-specialty clinic with various faculty doctors visiting here.

We have Dr. P.K. Acharya a general practitioner; Dr. Premananada Sarangi (Homeopathy), Dr. Swati Mullick (Gynaecology), Dr. G.S. Acharya (Pathology) and Dr. Lopamudra Mishra (Dental) visiting our Charitable dispensary on their scheduled days and rendering their services to the people.

We also have the provision for free medicine distribution.

So with this little effort, our dispensary continues its services to the mankind with the able help of its doctors and clinical assistant Mr. Dushmanta Nayak.

ROTARY SCHOOL & ROTARY CENTER

Rotary Centre & Rotary School a project sponsored by Rotary Club of Cuttack was inaugurated on 17.02.2002 on the day of Saraswati Puja at the old Dhenkanal Kothi, 845/1, Madhusudan Nagar, Tulasipur, Cuttack. The objective is to organize and co-ordinate activities of the club in various field eg. Education, Public services, Dance, Music, Drawing & Painting, etc.

Meanwhile, the Rotary Centre & Rotary School has completed ten years of their existence. The Rotary school is now providing pre-school classes for children between the age group of 2 to 5 years. The school is equipped with “Playing pre-school” facilities which are a little better than other such schools because the play way model has been structured according to the guidelines prepared by NCERT, New Delhi. Adequate space has been provided for free movement as well as for proper development of children. Specially trained Teachers have been appointed for this purpose to take care of students. The school is managed by one Teacher-cum-Principal, one Assistant Teacher and one Ayah.

One year Certificate course in “Odissi Dance” has been started from June, 2002 at Rotary Centre. Students are taking dance lessons from our Dance Teachers twice a week. The center is also providing teaching facility for Drawing and Painting.

The Centre celebrates its Annual Day every year to encourage the students and their parents.
