Dear Rtns,
At the fellowship on 26th Oct’13, you all saw a type of puppet show called Tholpavakoothu which is a form of shadow puppetry that is practiced in Kerala, India. It is performed using leather puppets as a ritual dedicated to Bhadrakali and is performed in Devi temples in specially built theatres called koothumadams. This art form is especially popular in the Palakkad, Thrissur and Malappuram districts of Kerala.
The same troupe that did the puppet show in the Kamal Hassan thriller “Dasavataram” did the show for us. This is a rare and dying(?) art form.
Immediately after the puppet show, we had Dandia, with professionals dancers to help those of us not familiar with it, to learn and dance ! Some photos …
regards
Jayaram
Dear Jayaram & Raji,
Rani & I enjoyed the evening very much. It was a very nice gesture to encourage the dying art of leather puppets. This, I think, is a form of community service of motivating artists. The attendance was good & so was the food. Congrats to your group for a splendid show.
Best Wishes
